albums you listened to once, didn't get it, and months later loved...

After reading the other post and thinking about some of the albums mentioned there (namely the Josh Ritter - Animal Years album) I began to think about albums that at first I didn't get, didn't listen to for several months and when I listened again they blew me away. I think it has alot to do with expectations. What style of music I'm really into at the moment, thinking that what I'm about to hear is in that style, and when it's not what I expected, I just don't get it.
The first album on my list:
Ray LaMontagne - Trouble
At first I thought it was boring, etc. I listened to it again 3-4 months later and listened to it for months on end. Saw him live and his voice blew me away.
The second is Josh Ritter - Animal Years
I must have stashed it away for a year before returning to it. When I did I was shocked at how good those songs were. So well crafted.
What do you have?

I'll agree with Trouble. Rain Dogs by Tom Waits confused me at first because it was so strange...now that I get it, I think it's one of the most brilliant albums ever.
Same goes for In The Aeroplane Over the Sea.

All of Wilco, practically. But years not months. Also the Smiths, who for the last two-three years have been my favorite band.

Moonrain.... I felt exactly the same about both albums. Just didn't get them at first, then I just suddenly loved them.
Funny enough, I felt this same way about Ryan Adams. Was introduced to Gold, it was OK but that was it. Whe the summer hit, I just missed these songs that I'd barely listened to. Gold was like my 4th of July soundtrack album. Tried out Heartbreaker, fell in love with the obvious favorites... and then it all clicked. All these whiskeytown albums finally held their worth! he's been my favorite ever since.

Sometimes I listen to Waits and think "God, if I didn't know any better I'd hate this."
My boss is admittedly into some pretty crappy music. He calls Tom Waits "Music that people who like good music listen to."

JCN was like that for me
Broken Hearts and Auto Parts - Kevn Kinney is another good one - I listened just to "A Good Country Mile" for the longest, but now I love the whole thing

James album I bought years ago. didn't like it. then years later I tried listening again and loved it!
same with an album by The Electric Soft Parade.
oh ya, Gold by Ryan. years later just thought it was incredibly beautiful. but first few times, thought it was just ok.
side one of Cold Roses took me months to enjoy or appreciate.

R.E.M.'s Up I pretty much hated the majority of this record when it was first released and seriously considered trying to return it. Thankfully, I didn't because about a year later it finally came to me.
Beach Boys Pet Sounds I listened to this in nearly every environment possible in an effort to "get" it but finally put it away. For some odd reason I pulled it out for a beach trip last summer and ended up giving it a spin at 3 in the morning. At long last I finally got it. I haven't listened to it since then though for fear the listening experience just won't be the same.

Same here--I couldn't believe how much I liked it once I started listening again. I think seeing them on SNL made me give it another listen, and now I think it's great!

okay, and i'll jump on the tom waits bandwagon too. i used to listen to him and wanted to like it but it was just so weird. then i saw the black rider and started listening to that album. then i moved on to more tom waits and now i love it.
and that's my story.

R.E.M.'s Up
Me too, Virg. When I first got it, I was questioning the wisdom of buying even as I handed over the money. I listened to it a couple of times and just kind of went "meh." Took it out again a month or so later and it just kind of occured to me. It stayed in the rotation for months afterward. I even had to buy a new one when my roommate's stereo was stolen and the CD was in it (bitches).
I still have a special appreciation for that album and play it often.
If you're so inclined.

Strangers Almanac. I don't know what it was about it, maybe it was just because I bought it because I thought I "should", but I just wasn't that into it - listened once then ignored it for ages. Then put it on again one night and was astounded.
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Bought it because everyone on the R.E.M. boards was all over it, but I really didn't get it - thought it was just a whole bunch of bleeps and noise. How wrong I was...now in my top 5 albums.

I don't rule out ever liking Waits, it's just so far I haven't had much luck in that dept. There have been artists I've never particularly cared for but under certain circumstances I finally had my interest piqued. You can never predict those moments, thank goodness.
For instance, I always kind of admired Johnny Cash from afar for years but it took my nephew (who's heavily into punk rock) playing one of his greatest hits albums continuously back in the early 90s for me to finally get motivated enough to start picking up his records. Strange thing is, I had been a fan of that type of country music for years. I'm not sure why I strayed from Cash for so long. Hell, he had to be one of the first country music artists I ever heard thanks to my Dad and my uncle even if it was via 8-track.

Strangers Almanac for me too - I'm pretty sure no one, at least no one I knew, in Yorkshire was listening to country, alt or otherwise. I put it on real quiet but I was still embarrased - it went back on the shelf until just after Heartbreaker came out.

I have never felt embarrassed by any of the music I listen to or felt the need to "hide" it. I can remember listening to Whiskeytown at work in Jacksonhell, NC and one of my co-workers putting on a mixtape with some Madonna on it. Now, that's something you should be embarrassed by.

The first Ron Wood solo record from 1974, "I've Got My Own Album To Do". At fist I just had it on in the background and it sounded like sub-par Faces and Stones demos. But then I threw it on again months later and realized it completely rules. It injects that Faces warmth and good humor that the Stones always lacked, and also brings to the table the raunch-n-roll aspect that the Faces often didn't quite hit on the head. Now one of my favorite records ever. Great summer album. Soon it will be time to break it out again for the season.

hated it. then loathed it. was close to selling/deleting it.
then was on a beach in western aussie and 'the hardest part' came on random. so gave the record one last pop. turns out, its great! especially as a record rather than indiviual songs...
still think its terribly produced. ryans vocals are all off...but its still great, cos, y'know, its RA...

I like 29 but still haven't listened to it more than a half dozen times or so. It dictates a 3 am in the morning with a bottle of wine and candlelight mood and I just don't find myself there very often.

My Morning Jacket - At Dawn
The first several times I lestened to it I though he sounded a bit whiney and strange. After a month or so it grew on me and now I love it.
