Ten people are feared dead after a gun attack at a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie in the US, according to news reports.

A gunman in a gas mask opened fire at the cinema in the Denver suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas canister, local radio said.

Reporter Brenda Stuart said movie-goers thought the attack was part of the film at first.

She told Sky News: "A lot of people thought the gunshots were part of the movie.

"Then bullets started flying."

She added: "Police officers are taking people to hospital themselves, not waiting for ambulances."

Ms Stuart said the incident happened about 30 minutes into the screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

"Right now they have no suspects," she said.

Ernest Istook, the host of the show and a former Oklahoma congressman, jumped in to clarify that nobody knows the motivation of the alleged Aurora gunman. Gohmert said that may be true, but suggested the shootings were still "a terrorist act" that could have been avoided if the country placed a higher value on God.

"People say ... where was God in all of this?" Gohmert said. "We've threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God's name, they're going to be jailed ... I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don't want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present."

Gohmert also said the tragedy could have been lessened if someone else in the movie theater had been carrying a gun and took down the lone shooter. Istook noted that Colorado laws allow people to carry concealed guns.

"It does make me wonder, with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying a gun that could have stopped this guy more quickly?" he asked."

This was just a terrible way to prove there is no Batman.

update: the guy from knoxville had 8 bullet wounds across his legs/thighs and more wounds from ricochets. No vital organs hit. I could see how it was easily exaggerated to 20. He is in stable condition. He is Knoxville's hero now, he covered his wife during the attack. They were sitting front and center of the theater. He is also very hot.

We had a discussion in class last night about the Colorado shooting, possible gun control and how to curb gun violence/mass public murders. Here's what I learned:

-One student in a class of 15 admitted to owning a gun, although she said she had no affiliation with the NRA
-The same student said she'd used a semi-automatic weapon to hunt and that it made it easier, although she confessed that banning this type of weapon would not cause her much consternation
-College students are not very well informed
-Two older students (roughly middle aged) believed that if the movie goers had been armed that some of the murders could've been prevented
-The majority of students believed any form of gun control would not only be impossible to enact but also ineffectual, which leads me to my final assertion...
-The NRA has done it's job of spreading misinformation very well

Even gun owners who have a legal carry permit in Colorado could not have their gun with them in the theater(the Aurora movie house bans firearms on the premises, needless to say the Joker didn't bother to comply with this restriction).In Colorado, like most other states, business owners can prohibit customers from carrying their weapons on the premise. So legally, they couldn't even have defended themselves or others if they did own a firearm. Just wait passively like sheep for the slaughter. Self-defense always seems very rational to me, not being able to defend yourself doesn't gharland.

He didn't kick it down, he actually bought a ticket and was sitting down front, he faked getting a phonecall, left via the exit and propped it open so he could get back in, went to his car which was parked nearby, got his weapons and body armor and came back blazing away.

The senseless and horrific killings last week at a movie theater in Colorado reminded Americans that life is fragile and beautiful, and we should not take family, friends, and loved ones for granted. Our prayers go out to the injured victims and the families of those killed. As a nation we should use this terrible event to come together with the resolve to create a society that better values life.

We should also face the sober reality that government cannot protect us from all possible harm. Furthermore, it is the role of civil society rather than government to build a culture of responsible, peaceful, productive individuals. Government cannot mandate morality or instill hope in troubled individuals. External controls on our behavior imposed by government through laws, police, and jails usually apply only after a terrible crime has occurred.

Internal self governance, by contrast, is a much more powerful regulator of human behavior than any law. This self-governance must be developed from birth, first by parents but later also through the positive influence of relatives and adult role models. Beyond childhood, character development can occur through religious, civic, and social institutions. Ultimately, self-governance cannot be developed without an underlying foundation of morality.

Government, however, is not a moral actor. The state should protect our rights, but it cannot develop our character. Whenever terrible crimes occur, many Americans understandably demand that government “do something” to prevent similar crimes in the future. Society/government does shape our character and in a way, it's creating these monsters and then giving them free access to weapons that allow them to act out on their impulses. He fails to address the one thing that could possibly help curb these issues: gun control (specifically making semi-automatic weapons illegal again). Our politicians are some of the most ineffectual in the world, and Paul is a perfect reason why: he addresses broad and unrealistic concerns rather than focusing on how government can improve our lives and dealing with actual specific issues and real solutions.
