Actor and comedian Fred Willard was arrested on suspicion of engaging in a lewd act at an adult theater in Hollywood, police said Thursday.

The 72-year-old actor was arrested about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday by uniformed vice officers doing a routine inspection at the Tiki Theater in the 5400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Chuck Slater.

Slater said officers observed Willard "engaged in a lewd act" but did not elaborate.

Willard was booked and released on his own recognizance, Slater said.

Willard's publicist said he had no comment.

Willard's credits include "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "This is Spinal Tap" and "Wall-E."

I think Fred Willard is one of he funniest men ever. I was watching the director commentary on one of Christopher Guest's movies and Guest said whenever Willard is on a roll you just have to let him go. It's never premeditated, he just rolls with it.

On his way out, Fred, with his wife by his side, said he and the cops have "a difference of opinion." He also says "a strange situation" led him to the theater, but says, "It's all being straightened out."
