Virginia is the still the South, right?

I was wondering. I dated a girl once from Alabama and she used to tease me I guess and say "You know, Virginia is not the Real South".And I felt like saying- yeah, but we were Southern long before Alabama ever existed! But I was too polite to say anything. So, if Virginia is not "The Real South", are we a diet coke version of the South? I realize very few people think D.C. and Northern Virginia are "South" anymore- although they used to very well be. I guess things do change. But I definitely consider myself a Southerner. I mean, sweet tea flows through my blood line.

Virginia is the oldest of the Southern states. We invented much of what the rest of the South copied and stoled from us- including the first recipe for sweet tea and spoonbread. Not to mention, Richmond was the longest running Capital of the glorious Confederacy. We grow cotton and peanuts here. Call us "Mid Atlantic" if you must, but never dare call us the North. Ever.

No, Virginians are lumped in with Maryland, D.C., etc.
Real people in the real south are something you don't want to be, trust me.
But you're missing the point. You're too old to care about these kinds of things. Don't tie up your identity with the state you live in...that's been a mistake formerly banned orgers have made.
It's time for your nuts to secede from the north so you can be your own person, Virginian or not.

Yes, but Richmond is closer to North Carolina than it is to D.C. Look at the gap between Richmond and D.C. Ain't no big cities in Virginia like there are in the Northeast- one after the other . Northern Virginia is just a big suburb, but it is still different from D.C. and Maryland. People coming across the Potomac feel the change right away. I am a Real Southerner. My family comes from Richmond for over 12 generations. And yes, I know what real Southern food tastes like- I was raised on it. I know what real Southern is, because I was exposed to it. I know all the little stuff that goes with it too. The nice to your face, fake behind your back, good 'ol boy vs redneck, etc. The ancestor worship.. I know all of that. You don't know the real Virginia, if all you've had is NOVA. Thats why in 1957, my mother hopped on the train to get as far away from Richmond aka "The South", as she could. Ironically, she wound up back there, and now her ashes are buried there. I'm not old. I'm probably around your age. I've been to the Deep South, The only thing that is more Southern there is that people used "might could" a lot more.
And of course there's this:

Texas is only 'Southern' to Non-Southerners who see movies and TV shows. But I will concede then. IMO, Texas is not truly Southern- like say the way Georgia and The Carolinas or even Virginia are Southern. Its much more Western and cowboy culture- its just very different. And the accents out there, just totally different. To most Non-Southerners they think Texas is like the epitome of Southern culture, but to real Southerners, we know better. Its just a whole 'nother country. Same with Louisiana. That being said, Texas does have great BBQ.

Meade,
If I were a Southerner I would hope most people would include a state that brings Austin into the equation just to balance out Mississippi's inclusion.
Portland, Seattle, San Fancisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego are all vastly different cities. But they are all still "West Coast".

Yes, Willie Cash, but you see there is still that aura of "Southern" that connects the South from Virginia to Georgia and westward. I would say that line stops at East Texas, with most of Texas being atypically Southern- in terms of culture, attitude, cuisine, dialect, and all those certain idiosyncrasies which are nuances that you pick as being "Southern". Yes, each state is different, but Texas is not typically Southern in the traditional sense. Like it was never truly part of the Old South.

I'm not sure where someone gets a sense of pride from this, honestly. George Carlin has a bit about how stupid it is to be proud to be born Irish. You are proud of the one thing (being Southern) that you played no part in accomplishing.
Real Southerners, as I referred to them, work hard, don't complain/obsess about their looks, and have survival skills. They can hunt, fish, grow food, and they look older than 24, even if they're 18 because they spend a lot of time outside kicking ass at the aforementioned. They don't live on trust funds and take 1,000 pictures of themselves wearing fake cowboy shit.
You're not a real southerner and I don't think you want to be one. I wouldn't be surprised if you carry a compact and concealer make up. Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Mister Ely,
You're talking about blue collar vs white collar. I'm talking about Southern. All the things you said could apply to poor Yankee farmers in the Midwest or poor people in Appalachia that live in Upstate New York. I know lots of people from New England that would fit your description. Being "Country" , also , while closely linked, is not the same as being "Southern". The South takes more pride in our provincialism- but its not quite the same as Northern Provincialism. That is not being a "real" Southerner.
BTW, I can hunt, fish, and ride with the best of them. If you want to be "Country". Just listen to Country radio today and their fake "redneck" anthems- lots of these people aren't even from the South. They're form Ohio or Canada something. That is not synonomous with South. You can tell I'm from the South, just by the way I dress. For heaven's sakes. Northern men spike their hair with gel and wear muscle t-shirts and prance around like apes. Just watch "Jersey Shore" and you'll see what I mean.

Florida, like Texas is not "The South" culturally anymore. With the exception of extreme north Florida. Anything South of Orlando- or actually south of Tallahassee for that matter is the North turned upside down. My father jokes Florida is so far South, you're in the North again, lol.

I have seen Negroes at the Cracker Barrel outside of Richmond. They usually order the country fried steak. But it does seem they prefer Lee's Fried Chicken. Always lots of them in there.
Grits are really good if they are done right. I especially like cheese grits. They're always a must for brunch. And, of course, sweet tea is good too. I've tried un-sweet tea. Its just nasty stuff. Nasty. I would rather just have plain 'ol water than have unsweet tea.

I've updated Snopes.com with this information. Verdict: FAKE.
Unrelated, have you been to a restaurant on downtown Broad St. called "Comfort"? It's a fine southern establishment.

Yes, I know he's a fake. I guess That was my point.
Anyways, I think we've come to a good conclusion. Its obvious that Virginia is and always will be the South, even with occcupied "NOVA" and other things lumping us in with the Mid-Atlantic region. Moreso, than Texas, although I guess here's the bottom line: The South is the 11 Former States of the Confederacy. That leaves out the border states, so it takes care of the Marylanders, Kentuckians, Missouri folks, and all the wannabees. Yay, we're done.
Yes, I have been to "Comfort". Its fake. A real Southern restaurant in Richmond is called the Strawberry Street Cafe. Because its just a bunch of Richmonders who enjoy the bath tub salad bar.

At the end of all this, who really gives a flying fuck? You really aren't doing much to dispel the stereotype of southerners as somewhat dimwitted are you?

You live in a very small southern bubble and you don't even know it, Meade.
I'm not saying you have to necessarily travel to experience other types of people and things, but it's like your brain can't get past the county line.
