Brad Rice...

...still looks like an incredible douchebag after nine years in that So Alive live at Letterman video.

Re: Brad Rice...

Can't say I've ever thought of the guy as a "douchebag". Incredible guitarist? Yes. Perhaps what I like most about that performance is how Paul and the band launch into "Pride (In the Name of Love)" immediately afterwards without missing a beat. Ryan was definitely in full Rick Moranis mode back in those days.

Re: Brad Rice...

Yeah, I don't think he looks like a douche.

Re: Brad Rice...

Brad Rice is anything but a douche.

Re: Brad Rice...

I have no idea what a human douche looks like. Brad Rice is considered by many of his Raleigh friends a fellow musicians to be one of the best ever to live here. His old band Finger is legendary and one of the bands I really hate I missed. His old band The Backsliders is the stuff of legend as well. I've seen The Backsliders but never with Brad and many say to be a perfect lineup it must have Brad.

Re: Brad Rice...

Some of my favorite Ryan shows that I attended were ones that Brad played...

Re: Brad Rice...

"Some of my favorite Ryan shows that I attended were ones that Brad played..."

Oh hell yeah. That and Ryan was wasted with a bottle of wine by his mic stand. (I realize that someone can't live like that forever)
It was just as much about Bucky Baxter too.

Re: Brad Rice...

Agreed....Bucky Baxter was great, and I loved how those shows careeened on the edge of control, like good rock n roll should. And I continued to like the early Cardinals (albeit for different reasons), but it was having seen those Sweetheart Revolution/Pinkhearts shows that made the latterday Cardinals so meh. Technically ubercompetent, but in the end, meh.

Re: Brad Rice...

I never saw him play in the Backsliders either but I have seen him play in a band called The Anti-Carpetbaggers League which included everyone from the Backsliders save for Steve Howell. I've also seen him in Whiskeytown, Ryan's band and with Tift Merritt. Definitely a go to guitarist in these parts.

Re: Brad Rice...

Oh, this old song and dance? The Pinkhearts were a horrible band, so perhaps I've unfairly judged Brad Rice but I also am not a fan. I'm sure he's a capable guitarist but I don't care for his taste. Find his playing somewhat boring.

Re: Brad Rice...

Boring? Really? Have you seen him play live? I've heard a lot of things about his playing but never boring.

I've heard pros say part of what makes him so amazing is the way he almost plays the notes wrong. I was standing next to one of my favorite guitarist at a Backsliders benefit for Alejandro Escovedo show and he was a bit drink and mad that Brad was not there. He told me go ahead and enjoy it but it pissed him off that Brad was not playing. Funny. That drunken guitarist is Marc Smith of Patty Hurst Shifter and Snatches of Pink.

Re: Brad Rice...

You are such an ass.

I ain't got nothing but love for you now.

Re: Brad Rice...

So, it's official, everything Waves has ever said on this board I disagree with.

No really, I don't recall ever agreeing on anything.

Except Oklahoma Joe's. We agree on that.

Re: Brad Rice...

Littleamen, Waves is cool on person.

Highlife might be but on here I've been ignoring him for over a week and as you can see above I think he's calling me an ass. He might be one of my biggest fans but I think he would be scared to speak to me in person.

littleamen, have you seen these boring videos of brad?

Check out this video on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTpFj3qvKsg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Re: Brad Rice...

You're right. That was a pretty boring video.

I have never done a Youtube search on B.R. But I've seen him in person more than once. Which I hold in much higher esteem than some asshole holding up his phone for 3/4 of a song (or Waves' opinion).

Re: Brad Rice...

I was kidding about the video. I know the sound and video is so so. It says it was shot with a flip not a phone at all. Anyway, I would love nothing more than to see Brad rock it with chip.

Re: Brad Rice...

i got the joke. Sorry it didn't come across in the reply

Dude, Brad Rice rules. If all the haters of this thread have beef, then they can either provide a reason or shut the fuck up.

I'm sick of haters on this site. Remember when this website was all about the love/hate for R.A. stuff that was "right now."? Remember when we resorted to hating R.A. stuff that was current? God, i miss those days

Re: Brad Rice...

There's one hater in this thread -the one at the top.

The rest of us like the guy. Good rant, though jughead ..glad you read the thread.

Re: Brad Rice...

Everyone with a shiny glitter guitar is an ass in my view. Too American and too 'look at me although I am just a guy in the backing band'. He might make good music, but I don't care for his persona.

Re: Brad Rice...

Brent Best of Slobberbone fame just "liked" the Brad Rice video I posted on my Facebook page last night. Same video as posted above. Maybe Brent likes everything about the video but Brad and his shiny guitar.

Re: Brad Rice...

And speaking of backing band. The Keith urban clips I watched seemed to show a Keith urban who enjoyed showing off brad. Keith probably could not afford a better guitar player. Tift, Ryan and Son Volt all fucked up as well.

Re: Brad Rice...

I was fortunate to see Brad last time he played Raleigh. He played guitar for both bands that night and it was a packed show of about 1000 people. He was Tifts guitar player for her whole set and then he came back out and played the entire set with Son Volt. That was my favorite Son Volt show ever.

I just wikied The Backsliders, never knew Dayna Kurtz played bass in a band.

I like her a lot. She has a new cd out.

edit: oops, DANNY KURTZ...never heard of him, must be an asshole.

Re: Brad Rice...

I know Dayna and I have her new record. I met her at a Malcolm Holcombe show in Hoboken, NJ. She as on old Malcolm fan from way back. I know Danny's wife better than I know him. . Danny was in Whiskeytown as well as The Backsliders. Danny now plays in Hank Sinatra and you might remember a band named Roman Candle that he play in a few years back. I keep meaning to ask Danny or Dayna if they are related. Another little fact is that Danny's brother is one of the founders of Record Store Day.

Re: Brad Rice...

the cardinals were a snoozefest compared to the pinkhearts, just as his recent solo shows were, compared to the 2002 tour. (and just as his post 2005 output is). if you really prefer the 'technically accurate' 05 cardinals shows to rock n roll fests of the pinkhearts i pity you.

Re: Brad Rice...

Joe Pesci is very right.
That 2002 tour blew my mind. Made me a fan for live. All the tours after that were, while obviously a lot cleaner, more rehearsed, better organized and actually prepared - boring compared to the 2002 fire on the stage.

"I know Dayna and I have her new record."

Which one? Secret Canon vol.1? She's playing here Sunday next week. I've seen her two or three times, always a good show. She's also responsible for the best Tom Waits cover I have ever heard, Pony.

Re: Brad Rice...

Secret Canon it is. I purchased the vinyl/cd kickstart thing. I have yet to see her play live. The night I met her, she had run down to catch Malcolm's show. She had to head back to the studio where she was recording a band from The Netherlands called Room 11. Malcom wrote an old song called Room 11 but I don't think they haver heard of him or vice versa. Malcolm handed Dayna his new EP and she saw the song Backin' Up on Peggy and started singing it. Here she could sing it and I had never even heard it. She talked with me a bit and I started yapping about alt-country bands and she said she did not know much about that but that her husband had something to do with the early days of a band called Uncle Tupelo.

Heard some Malcolm news about his new record and who one of the guest vocalists is on the record. The woman who told me said it would be made public soon, so I must wait until then to tell. It's a duet with someone that everyone on this board has heard.

She's never been married, gringo.

Re: Brad Rice...

So is he her boyfriend or life partner? I could have sworn she said Husband. I think I would have noticed if she called him something else. I think she has refered to him as such on Facebook as well.

I have no idea, it was a joke.

Come on man, tell me who the guest vocalist is, I won't tell anyone else.

Re: Brad Rice...

I just looked at her Facebook and she has little heart by married. You had me worried that my lies had been outed.

You have seen the duet vocalist yourself. The mystery guest also plays harmonica on the song.

Oh, please.

Of all the Ry-Ry band members, Brad Rice is probably the LEAST douchebaggy.

Re: Brad Rice...

Strange that this would come up now - yesterday marked the anniversary of the last Pinkhearts show @ Battery Park 2003(am I the only remaining .orger who was there? Except keef). I'm on the Pinkhearts > Cardinals side. Also, Brad was on the Rock n' Roll tour, and if it wasn't for him those shows would have been complete utter shambles - even by Ryan's standards.

I was at that show with Keef, Gharland. How did we not meet?!?

The people I was with (jukebox bully, SMA and another woman who's screen name I forgot) didn't want to go to Niagra afterward because they thought it would be kind of geeky.

Gee, thanks.

Re: Brad Rice...

well, those aren't their exact words. they just said they didn't want people coming up to them asking who they were on the .com. Being too cool for school y'know. I wanted to go, but what can you do? We went to a few other bars.

Whatevs.

Well, you missed out. I met Bob Gruen that night and that was a pretty big deal for a photography geek like me.

PS . . .

I know JB, but who's SMA?

Re: Brad Rice...

That was her tag sma, also betta betty I believe. I met Bob at a showing of his photos here in Toronto once.

Pinkhearts blew, you guys are hilarious. Cardinals 05 and 06 were the best live band stuff that Ryan has done.

Re: Brad Rice...

Maybe 05/06 was "good" or even "better" than the pink hearts. To say the pink hearts "blew" seems kinda like an exaggerated statement. Most musicians at that level of expertise, "blow". I've seen a few bands I thought "blew". If Waves and I started a band tomorrow, it would likely be in the top 10 "blowingest" bands in the land.

Blow Me

Re: Brad Rice...

Well, I won't be blowing you gringo. Sorry. I just don't think that was one of Ryan's better periods songwriting wise or based on the quality of the live shows and playing. Ryan has a tendency to play to the musicians around him. Pinkhearts sound like a two-bit bar band or crappy Stones wannabe. They really blew the coug.

EDIT: In fairness, Billy was probably the weakest part of the band.

Re: Brad Rice...

I totally agree with WavesCrashing. The Pinkhearts sound just like any other American garage band with some pals from the local factory thrown together. The Cardinals sound like some professional performers who make a living of it. Perhaps Brad and JP were just 'some Ryan pals' and Cathernine and Cindy were real muscians with a resume of their own, but at least they sound on Cold Roses like they mean it.

I don't want musicians to fool around on stage. If I want people to behave like fools, I will go to a retard facility.

Re: Brad Rice...

When I call a plumber to get my toilet fixed, I want him to get my toilet fixed not making jokes while drinking my coffee. When I watch a band play I want them to make good music, I don't want them to fool around on stage, sound shit and snort my money I paid them.

Re: Brad Rice...

Ryan has always been a pro surrounded by slackers.

Chip Robonson, Keith Urban, Tift Merritt and Son Volt should be ashamed of hiring a fool around slacker like Brad Rice.

Get your shit straight Brad and stop snorting up all of Ryans drugs. Oh yeah, that's right, you quit drinking years ago. You were sneaking around behind Ryan's having him think you were clean.

Fucking stupid Rolling Stones too. Those idiots hired you guys to open a bunch of shows. It must have been to showcase a bunch of sucky musicians to make their show look better.

LMMFAO.

Waves - I'm not sure what to say to you. maybe you're trying to be flippant or something - comparing musicians to plumbers doesn't make sense. Whatever - enjoy all the "professional" concerts in the future. If you are being serious, you obviously don't get it. That's all.
