Willie, have you ever heard Bob Dylan's cover of 'Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground?'

My answer is "Hummingbird" by Wilco. So many keys, yet such a concise, tightly written number.

Classic: Folsom Prison Blues

Modern: Blowin' It by J Mascis and the Fog, or some other early Dinosaur Jr. song. Those songs are in my bones, listened to them so many times.

Re: Songs You Wish You Had Written (Or Songs You Wish You Could Emulate)

I'm no songwriter, but if I was, I'd be very envious of Bob Dylan for writing "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."

As far as something more current, I'd say "The Blue" by Jason Isbell. Boy can turn a phrase like nobody's business.

Good pick with 'I Dream a Highway', GF!

I'd also like to add Iron and Wine's 'The Trapeze Swinger' to the list. Such a beautifully written song.

Standard: 'You Are My Sunshine'

Mississippi John Hurt has my favorite rendition.

Re: Songs You Wish You Had Written (Or Songs You Wish You Could Emulate)

Lissie's cover of You Are My Sunshine is really nice too.

Ooh, speaking of Iron and Wine, "Sodom South Georgia" is on that list for me. Just perfect composition and feel. "Trapeze Swinger" is up there too.

I agree with CN on God Only Knows. And not ironically. It's a perfect little song.

EDIT Wait. I guess I agree with overactive. I like God Only Knows, and Wouldn't it be Nice is fantastic in my book. I only skim CN's posts usually and thought he was saying he liked God Only Knows.
