Into the Abyss

Have y'all seen this? It's a documentary by Werner Herzog about a murder case/execution in Texas. It's very affecting. I tend to fall on the side of supporting the death penalty, even though I reserve the right to change my mind. This isn't really a political film, although he makes it very clear that he is not a supporter. It's interesting because it there's no real doubt that the guys are guilty and it was just the stupidest, most pointless, ugly kind of violence. It was a very interesting and ballsy choice to make a statement about the sacredness of life out of something so purely indefensible and disgusting. Although, I did sometimes feel like he was putting words in people's mouths a couple of times.

I abhor, just fucking hate, true crime stories, but I felt compelled to watch this because it came on a good recommendation and it happened in the town where I went to high school- or part of it, anyway. It was pretty surreal to watch.

Not to steal your thunder here, or... your... thread subject's thunder?? I haven't seen it- not so big on documentaries/non-fiction, but while I know Herzog is known for this genre, I watched Bad Lieutenant (2009 version) for the second time the other day and thought it was fucking brilliant. Dude should get away from docs more often!

Re: Into the Abyss

his Bad Lieutenant is indeed brilliant! need to watch that one again..

Re: Into the Abyss

I've seen Bad Santa.

Love Herzog. Haven't seen this, definitely want to now.

Minorities and poor people get the death penalty at a higher rate than whites for the same type of crimes, so I'm against it because I view it as institutionalized racism.

Also, Rick Santorum is for the death penalty.

Re: Into the Abyss

I would guess that economics and the fact that poor people don't have the money to hire the best legal council might skew those numbers at least as much as "institutionalized racism" does.

Saw "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" on 3D a while ago. Incredible. If you have a chance, go see it.

The premise of this n one doesn't strike me as very original but I will see it, just cos it's Herzog.

Why should the state have right to murder?

Re: Into the Abyss

Concur, Dougo.

You can call it institutionalized classism or class discrimination.

I understand that the world is an unfair place and we all don't get to go to the best schools but this kind of inequality due to economic stratification is unacceptable.

Re: Into the Abyss

The world is certainly unfair in that regard. The US probably less so than many other countries and cultures.

So the problem isn't institutionalized murder, it's a class problem? Not sure I follow.

Re: Into the Abyss

Not sure I follow.

Hamster, you need to understand that we're a deeply Christian nation...

"I watched Bad Lieutenant (2009 version) for the second time the other day and thought it was fucking brilliant."

Cage has got nothing on Keitel and the only Bad Lieutenant that matters is Ferrara's original Bad Lieutenant.
