Bob Dylan Working On New Record

At least according to a recent interview with David Hidalgo of Los Lobos. More info here.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

Bob Dylan's next studio album is reportedly finished, and almost ready for the press to hear. Dylan fan Sean Bevington contacted me to share this information after bumping into Allan Jones, editor of the British magazine UNCUT, at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton, England, late last week. According to Bevington:

That first night Mr Jones told me that he had just been contacted (that day I think, which was Thursday) by Sony/Columbia Records regarding the newly recorded Dylan album. It was ready, they had told him, and the label was planning a "test listen" to be held in London this Wednesday night for "sympathetic ears." He said that the listening was going to happen at a theater in Leicester Square but that he didn’t know much more than that. I tried not to look/sound too overeager (pant, pant, pant – can I come?) and thanked him for letting me know. He said that they hadn’t shared any information with him about how the record sounded or who played on it, etc. I said that I hoped to see him later on in the festival and bade him a good night.

Luckily, Bevington bumped into Jones again on Saturday night:

Thankfully he remembered me and after a little while I managed to ask him about the “test listen.” He told me that he’d since been contacted by the office of Jeff Rosen (Dylan’s manager as I’m sure you all know) and that they had told him that the listening party had been canceled. He said that now, as it stood, he alone had been granted the opportunity to listen to the album next week and that they would be in touch with the details. He said that this was similar to what had happened prior to the release of Tell Tale Signs – which was that it was going to be him, a Dylan-managerial type and the record (on vinyl? he sadly didn’t elaborate…) in an empty room somewhere in central London.

This story sounds similar to one told by Billy Joel, when he was offered the chance to cover "Make You Feel Me Love" in 1997 before it was released by Dylan.

If you want to read Bevington's complete story, he posted it at the Expecting Rain Discussions group site.

Thanks to Sean Bevington for sharing his experience.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

Several weeks ago, Los Lobos member David Hidalgo revealed some information about Bob Dylan‘s upcoming 35th studio album. Now we have more insider details about the songs and a possible release date.

Previously, Hidalgo said he’d just wrapped recording sessions with the music legend at Jackson Browne‘s studio in Los Angeles, and that Dylan was especially fascinated by the Mexican instruments lying around the studio. “He’d say, ‘Wow, what’s that?’ He liked the sound. So we’d get it in there,” Hidalgo said.

Whether or not the new record has a South-of-the-Border flavor remains to be seen, but Dylan fan publication ISIS now reports that although “listening sessions for Sony staff in New York and London have already taken place,” those in attendance were sworn to secrecy about what they heard.

That said, ISIS has inside info indicating the album will have 10 tracks with just over an hour of music. And you’d better have a comfortable chair when you check it out, because there’s apparently a 14-minute Titanic-themed song and another ditty that runs a full nine minutes.

The still-untitled record is slated for a possible September drop, which ISIS points out is before the Grammy Award deadline and also gets the album out there in time for the holiday shopping season.

We’re not sure why Dylan (who just had a birthday, by the way) would compose a song about the Titanic, let alone one that seems longer than the ocean liner’s doomed voyage. But as with all things Dylan, part of the man’s appeal is his mystery — so we’ll all just have to wait to find out.

I hope it has lots of accordion in it.

I spoke with Hidalgo regarding the album about a month and a half ago.

Ask me questions here.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

Will the new record be available at participating Chipotle restaurants?

Will Dylan use melodic phrasing or will he just do another monotone mumble album?

That artwork is so bad its actually ironically good.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

I think I'd rather look at the song titles and imagine a young Dylan singing a song with that title.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

I wonder what the reasoning was-- back in the 1990s-- behind the decision to call in Billy Joel and see if wanted first crack at recording, 'to make you feel my love'?

"Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009"

Not really something I'd have included in a blurb about his career highlights since 2000.

I kinda like Christmas in the Heart! But I wouldn't exactly call it a hightlight in Dylan's career, either. It's a curiosity at best. Looking forward to the new record. Been listening to Tell Tale Signs a lot again these past few weeks. How good is Cross the Green Mountain?

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

Not as good as Huck's Tune, but pretty fucking good nonetheless.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

people are gonna love this one... up there with Love & Theft and Modern Times. loads of storytelling.. Dylan sounds focussed (altho his voice is hit and miss). some rockers, some ballads, no lightweight throwaways. pretty damn good album on first listen!

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

I like it. More than like it. I think it is his best since L&T and easily better than the last one. That song "Roll On, John" just kills me. I got it last night and we listened to it 3 times in a row. Dylan makes the music he makes and you either are onto his vibe or not. He's more than earned that.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

That's complete bullshit. Like you have friends.

Re: Bob Dylan Working On New Record

his voice is hit and miss i agree..

i wonder what Daniel Lanois would have done with these songs. he could have made Soon After Midnight (very reminiscent of Shooting Star), Long And Wasted Years and Pay In Blood sound like something off Oh Mercy... (probably my fav of his later albums)
