Peak 8 exercises
Willie’s White Castle thread begot this thread. So aim your ire at that trucker speed troubadour. This might only interest fitness fanatics like Page, Whitebuffalo, and Shadow Monkey.
Ayo, when you think of cardio you think of long slogs on a treadmill or elliptical machine. Running a 10K or a marathon. These are inferior approaches to cardiovascular health and weight loss. Marathons can actually cause scarring of your heart or fibrosis that can lead to heart failure. I’m posting at you, ScottyOrr.
Peak 8 is simple. Warm up for 3 mins. Go balls out for 30 seconds on a treadmill/elliptical/track/bike and then back to moderate pace for 90 seconds. Do this eight times. Don’t eat carbs or sugars for two hours after completing Peak 8. Eat protein. Do this exercise only 2-3 times a week.
Benefits
Boost human growth hormone (HGH) by using the superfast twitch part of your muscles. HGH is the shit Sly Stallone injects before filming Rambo VII. You can create it naturally with these exercises and that’s why there is no HGH testing being done in professional sports. HGH lowers body fat and increases muscle tone. After your 30s people experience somatopause where production of HGH drops off dramatically.
This is the most efficient cardio routine I’ve ever seen and it’s one of the few that produces HGH.
I was going to title this thread Flood Your Body With This "Youth Hormone" in Just 20 Minutes. Kinda frooty sounding, though.

"Peak 8"? It's pretty much the Tabata Method, just a little more rest/low-intensity inbetween the high-intensity bursts. Very effective in making you feel like you're gonna die- and working muscles to fatigue. At our crossfit box we do a Tabata interval exercise probably once a week doing any number of movement- rowing, pushups, push-press, power cleans, sit-ups, air squats whatever, it all makes you cry like a girl by the end

I usually do 2 minutes of 75%, and a minute of balls-to-the-wall, and do that 3 or 4 times. Think the smaller intervals are more beneficial?

there is HGH testing in both baseball and football.
the NFL's new 10 year CBA requires annual testing for HGH specifically and the MLB is implementing the same testing procedures by rolling it out in the minors first. there have already been minor leaguers suspended for testing positive for HGH.

i didn't have the fact check stats like cb, but i thought it was pretty well known hgh was tested for in both baseball and football.

One of the articles I read stated that HGH wasn't tested on athletes in the Olympics. I'll take a look and report back.

i used to be in good shape when i still played sports everyday and went to the gym. i was able to run 3700 meters in 12 min, in the cooper test.. now my muscles and everything else has deteriorated into shit.

Hey ely, just a question. Does it bug you when someone says they're on a diet and order a salad and instead of opting for a fat free vinaigrette they order a full fat double serving of ranch? And the salad is made out of iceberg lettuce instead of romaine or spinach. I have two coworkers that constantly do that and then give me looks when I eat my individual trader Joe's 250 calorie veggie pizza for lunch. Does it make you want to go "um hello..you're dressing alone is more calories that my lunch.".

im going to start this peak 8 tonight. im kind of interested.
the only problem is you look like a total prick doing this at the gym, and it's too dangerous to do on most roads. ill have to find a track.
im giong to give this 2 full weeks beginning this Sunday and see how i feel.
schedule-wise, especially, it would be insane to work out for an hour or 75 minutes 4-5 times a week when i could be doing 10-20 minutes 3 times a week.

The Bills' D is pretty awful, but their O is equally scary. If this was at the Ralph I would say Bills win easy. Here, I'm not as confident. The dome has got zero atmosphere, no tailgate parties and generally less noise. No real home advantage. The 'Skins could very well pull off an upset but I will still pick the Bills in my pool.

Lacey - Yeah, that's madness. I appreciate what you said about iceberg having no nutritional value.
You should tell your coworkers to read the nutritional value. My wife eats those similar type pizzas. Only 250-300 cal. Good choice.
Jef - It's quite an economical workout, except you're not supposed to have grains/sugars for 2 hours afterwards. That means you could eat the turkey and cheese in your lunchable, but you'd have to pass on the crackers or applesauce.

Thanks ely. I want to tell them that so bad. Also to quit telling me they're jealous because ill eat carbs. All within reason is what I'd like to say. This and cutting out almost all diet coke and diet Dr pepper has had me lose 30 pounds.
Instead they choose their extreme diets and haven't lost a thing.

also, ely - do you only do this? if i do this Peak 8 stuff 3 times a week, it still will feel good to go on a light, light jog with some weights on a couple of the other days.
nothing huge, but have been doing well with a few machines and some free weight exercises recently and would like to be able to keep doing them.

I read this was a study in Harvard that intervals like this is better than just straight consistency.
It doesn't need to be branded with a title though. It's just inserting speed bursts in any cardio. But I'm sure people are lining up to get the book already.

yeah, I've been hearing about this too, and am interested. I've been reading Tim Ferris' book 4 hour body, which sort of expands this idea of maxing out into bodybuilding. His slow carb diet is also really effective, in my experience: body fat drops away really fast- like my paunch was gone in 10 days.

this is a fucking brutal experience.
im no olympic athlete, but i excercise regularly - both cardio and some lifting - and i would say that i am at least in better shape than the average person on the street.
but i tried this tonight and ended by throwing up after 5 cycles.
i went to the gym and did like 5-8ish minutes on the elliptical, then did 15 minutes of stretching before walking a couple of blocks to a high school track.
again, i made it through 5 of the sprints and then limped through the 5th "cool down" phase, and physically could not handle anything further tonight. i had eaten well all day and drank plenty of water. also, i have worked out a few days in a row and was feeling pretty good and limber going in.
i suppose you are doing it right if you can't finish the first time? maybe? but brutal, and i am hurting. cannot wait for the 2 hour mark to hit so i can get some juice (or a beer).

my favorite workout is still on the elliptical though, and i suppose it employs the same ideas even if it is to a lesser extent:
minutes 1-15: as fast as possible
15:01-17: fast jog
17:01-23: as fast as possible
23:01-25: fast jog
25:01-30: as fast as possible
30:01-32: fast jog
32:01-36: as fast as possible
36:01-37: fast jog
37:01-40: as fast as possible
40:01-42 is a light jog and then until 45:00 at a fast jog.
i usually get to about 10 miles, but it has taken a few years to get there. it is brutal at first, but a well-timed playlist makes it fairly easy to get through. once you get through about the 23rd minute it feels easy.

Ya its unhealthy but I had 2 tacos from Jack in the box (closest place to work and I'm out of groceries and not going until after work) and miss judgey made a comment about it. I wanted to be like bitch you talked about getting hardees this weekend. You drink your 6th pop of the day and judge me but I haven't had any of this stuff in months.
I've been following the clean eating diet for the most part and I already regret my lunch.

From what I understand blood testing is the only conclusive way to determine HGH use, which as of today the MLBPA has not agreed to and I seriously doubt the NFL has either, though I'm not up to speed on their new CBA.

Oh I paid for those tacos. And honestly there's about a size difference between us. I may be bigger, but overall I'm healthier. Aside from having an iron issue and one other thing, but if I say it you'll probably say you don't believe in that thing.

At the business park where I work the smoking areas have been consolidated down to one 15 foot square from about 5 different locations because people complained. Which is fine... there is no need for a crew of smokers outside every exit.
After the change an obese woman at my job was complaining to a co-worker that they still allow people to smoke in this small area because it is less than 60 yards from a door (it's about 25 yards away).
She keeps a huge bowl of candy on her desk, sucks down sodas like manna, and piles through massive burritos at lunch.
Her reasoning was that she was "very concerned about her health."

I'm going with thyroid issues. l got sent in from some blood work and both that and my iron levels were below what they should be. I'm supposed to go back to the doctor. I just haven't yet. I'm very much I can fix it on my own.

That's like HIIT. High intensity interval training. The only time your body produces a certain enzyme is when it's in the 2 phase of working out, right before full intensity. The back to moderate from balls to the wall throws your body in that mode over and over so you are mostly in phase 2. (it's gotta name I just forgot). It is more effective with weight loss.

Lacey - Get your thyroid levels checked. If you have a low functioning thyroid, avoid soy and cruciferous (brassica family) vegetables. They are "goitrogenic." I have a good friend who was feeling lethargic, slightly depressed for no reason, and was putting on weight. She altered her diet and is healthy. Food is medicine.
If you have extra money, you could look into buying a water filter that removes fluoride (also goitrogenic).

Listen, I went to a personal trainer and tried all this. It did not work. The only way to lose weight is through diet. Cardio actually makes people hungrier and they will eat more. It should be done- but nothing like people do. 30 minutes of cardio 4x a week max. Weight liftin' and building muscle will do a lot more than cardio will ever do. Cardio is killing people. That is why I didnt lose weight all year last year.
