$2600 bodies only DSLRs. Full frame sensors
NIKON D700
Canon 5D Mark II
$500 high end pint and shoots
Nikon P7000
Canon G12.
I'm sick of thinking about it. Tonight I feel like going with the G12 if I can find focus rings for macro work.

go with the 5d if you're into shooting really nice looking video. plus it's got a full frame sensor (i believe the d700 does as well), meaning your lenses will all be the advertised focal length and you'll have some amazing quality photos

the g12 is an amazing camera...I used the g9 for years. I picked up a 60d recently, but still use the g9 when I don't want to carry a big camera. I'm a canon guy, so I can't really help much on the comparisons.

my buddy just got the canon s95 for christmas yesterday and i was very impressed for such a little camera
lots of easy to use manual controls optional and a low f number of "2.0"
however
my brother just got a canon 7d and I couldn't be more jealous
different classes altogether though. apples and oranges.

I'm currently pimpin the 2004 Sony Cybershot. A solid choice in the lower-low to low range "point-n-shoot" demographic. The 1"x1" rear screen is an industry leader in size.
Re: Cameras?

I'm leaning toward the G12.
I used mostly Pentax and some Nikon in the film days. Nikon Coolpix from 1998 until now.
I have friend who has become my favorite landscape and bird photographer and he has moved up with Canon until he now has the 5D Mark II. I've been following his work and obsessively been looking at Flickr for best pics of the last 7 days and searching by various cameras. It would be hard to argue anything is better than that camera for landscape images. It seems after looking for awhile one can guess above 90% of the time and be right that it's a Canon that took a particular shot.
I have several old and some quite good Nikon lenses and if it was not for those I would drop even thinking about the Nikons.
To start with Canon and get the macro lens I would want I'd need to spend around $4,000.00. I could could get a G12 with some non-Canon macro lenses for probably around $600 - $700. Granted I could not manual focus but I've seen some amazing macro focus stacking work on Flickr done with the Nikon P7000 and I see no reason the same could not be done with the G12 with similar lens attachments.
Those full frame sensor images especially the Canon are second to none especially when you start blowing them up but something tells me I'm not serious enough or willing to put the time in to make it worth it so I should go high end point and shoot like the G12.
Then there's all those cameras in between.
These are some attachments for the G12 that look like some good Macro enhancement solutions:

There are only two people who spend $2600 on a camera:
1). A professional photographer
2). A pretentious asshole who has too much money to spend.

Dudeman. Just a few short years ago 3MP cameras non DSLR were about $1200. The $2,600 full frame cameras now are the low end professional cameras. The thing is even if you are a pretentious asshole the images just look noticeably better when compared with lesser cameras. I would argue professionals, on average, spend $3000.00 or more for their bodies. Many pros now like to have a P7000 or a G12 along for when they don't want to drag out the big guns.

sean. this is good to know and I could not find answers to this. with my old coolpix 4500 and I think the 990 one could manual focus but it sucked because you can't see the manual focus. you had to turn the knob and each click equaled a certain distance. someone even made a micro chart you could put inside the card slot door but i was not willing to try the manual focus that way. I wonder how the G12 handles this without a focus ring?

As awesome as the G9/11/12 are (not so much the G10) I find myself only using the G11 when on vacation somewhere where I want quick shots and I don't want to lug around a huge lens. The last time I used it was in Vegas.
Though if it were up to me I'd have the 1D Mark IV.

Well, I'm about to eat my words here but I'm looking to upgrade my current Camera to something with a little more power and functionality.
I'm not prepared to drop the amount that would put me in the "pretentious asshole" range (not because I have a problem being a pretentious asshole but because I can't afford it...) but definitely want to upgrade to either a high end point & shoot or low to mid range SLR. I prefer Canon products.

I'm still interested in the Canon G12. I've placed my order for a Canon 5D Mark II but I'm not paying for that if it goes through. If you want to stay under the $400 range and don't mind Nikon. The P300 that someone mentioned above looks really good for low light live music shots and has really good HD video. Enough choices to make heads spin.

Thnaks Sean. I was playing with a G12 in BestBuy last night but I think I'm going with the Nikon. I want the 200 mmm equivalent zoom to snap pictures at Merlefest this year and my seats are about 20 rows back from the main stage. I also will use it for lots of mushroom pics. I think it will be fun to see how much i can get out of a smaller sensor point and shoot and know I did not spend much money. I think I'll purchase the new stereo mic that fits on the hotshow as well. I can see using that for live concert video.

Sony today announced (via Macworld UK) the launch of new image sensor technology that the company expects will help improve performance and shrink the size of cameras on mobile devices by later this year. The new back-illuminated complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor utilizes a pixel section layered directly onto the sensor's circuitry, significantly reducing the sensor size from the previous design that utilized pixel and circuit sections side-by-side on a substrate layer.
This image sensor layers the pixel section containing formations of back-illuminated structure pixels onto chips containing the circuit section for signal processing, which is in place of supporting substrates for conventional back-illuminated CMOS image sensors. This structure achieves further enhancement in image quality, superior functionalities and a more compact size that will lead to enhanced camera evolution.
With sampling set to begin in March, the new stacked CMOS sensor includes built-in signal processing technology and utilizes the company's "RGBW Coding" that adds white-light sensors to the traditional red, green and blue, offering better low-light camera performance. Enhanced high dynamic range (HDR) technology will also improve the sensor's movie capabilities in bright-light situations.
Apple had utilized OmniVision Technologies as its image sensor supplier on its mobile devices, but Sony was able attract at least part of Apple's business with the new 8-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 4S. With its new image sensor technology, which is set to enter mass production in the fall and begin appearing in products late this year or early next year, Sony is clearly looking to remain at the forefront of the booming mobile device camera market.

Nikon's new D800 SLR is a study in expectations and identity. Laid bare, the $3000 D800 is an impressive camera. But it's probably not the D800 that a lot of Nikon fans have been waiting for—what some feel they'd been virtually promised.
that's a lot of waiting for something that's not what you were virtually promised
