Anyone see it? It has to be fake right? Either way it was very enjoyable for what it was. And it was incredibly painful to watch the last 30 minutes.

its not rocket science that you dont know anything about someone you've never met. A facebook profile doesnt say shit. Anyone who falls in love thru facebook or any internet site is just plain dumb and deserves the embarrassment or torture or whatever bed they made that they gotta lie in.
the only internet relationship that is legit is mine and joost's

I finally watched this tonight!
I thought it was fabulously engrossing but is it a real doco? I have my doubts. Parts of it seemed too staged (the postcard) or that maybe they sensed this early on and then played it out for the sake of making the film.
Either way, it was good and Nev was a bit of a fox. It did make me wonder a little about this place though and which ones of you kids are not quite what you say you are!

I felt like I wasted my time with this movie. The story wasn't too surprising, and it really annoyed me how he talked to people from the internet. I don't really want to meet anyone else from the internet if that is how I act.
Also kinda creepy that it started by the mom's really young daughter... I wouldn't have wanted to interact with some mom and her daughter.

What's the deal with the title of the film (Catfish)? Is this some metaphor for a lie over the internet that grows and grows with no end in sight?
Sidenote: In five years will the majority of future married couples/couples meet online?

I understand exactly what you're going for, and I think it could be a great meme on the boards here.
Sidenote: As a documenter of the "goings on" here, you sure make a lot of impact on the very thing you are documenting. You're like a political reporter who bribes people in office.

For Ely - some may consider it a spoiler....
Without ruining the film for you, one of the characters at the end of the film says this...
"They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They’d keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with this idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them. And the catfish would keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life. And they keep you on your toes, they keep you guessin’ they keep you thinkin’ they keep you fresh. And I thank god for the catfish, because we would be dull and boring if we didn’t have somebody nipping at our fin."
I kind of thought differently over it. Catfish are bottom feeders, end of story.

So... my wife and I are debating whether this thing is real or not... some of it seems a bit too smooth for it to be real, but then it would seem that if it's a "hoax" it would have to a pretty damn elaborate one...
I'm confused.
Maybe this really happened with all those people... but maybe the guys then went and made a "documentary" about it afterwards with the real people involved and everything?
Fuck knows... great viewing though! thanks for the recommend.

If the movie is not completely fake, I bet this is how it went down.
1.Main character had online relationship with the family for a couple months.
2. He started to notice inconsistencies in the families story.
3. Recreated the relationship for the documentary acting out him noticing the inconsistencies etc.
4. Went to meet the family.

C'mon, it was way too predictable, except for the fact that there really was an Abby. I was thinking she wasn't even "real," especially when she wasn't home once they first went up to Angela's house.

It was predictable that they were lying online. There is no way to predict the rest. That was the best part. The fact that the woman kept up the charade after being essentialy caught was great. I still think its fake though.

it's quick to point out "oh how is this lady so insnae" etc. but how many people have always been 100% honest on message boards/forums?
in the end, she comes off as an overall caring and decent person who just isnt very happy and turns to the internet. she had no reason to think that these lies would ever catch up to her, and i found myself annoyed with the filmmakers for large parts of the movie for tracking her down in the first place.
that said, it is eventually kind of clear that her actions arent totally harmless based on the fact that the guy at least develops some sort of affection for her and seems genuinely hurt.
really enjoyed watching this and studying how the characters kind of evolved.

I am with you about her being a decent person, Jef. When you learn of the mentally disabled children, the estranged child and the fact that she created all of those people you start to realize that she used the internet as an escape from her shitty life. She was living vicariously through someone that didn't really exist. It's an intriguing movie. I have never really spent much energy on trying to determine how much of it is 'real' or not because it never really mattered to me. I really felt sorry for her husband. A more 'with it' guy would be more terrified of finding that their wife was creating different personae online than finding out they were cheating. Well, at least I would be.

Good bleu cheese dressing recipe:
1/2 mayo, 1/2 sour cream.
Quality Bleu cheese crumbled.
Some Texas Pete (the vinegar and heat cut the fat of the rest of it--but just add a little, not enough to turn the mixture pink)
salt and pepper.
Easy to make a wedge at home. Add bacon, iceberg, tomatoes and onion and you're there. The dressing is amazingly easy to make and almost foolproof.
