ah heartbreaker. couple of duds but a big whole bunch of sublime, sublime songs.

ten years of badger's homosexuality, too. not that there's anything wrong with that.

he could make great a album again if he started injecting crack into his eye again.. mandy "cunty cuntersson" moore (aka more cock in ass) has planted a seed of mediocrity into his brain.

which ones do you think are duds, out of curiosity?

with the exception of "sweet lil' gal", Heartbreaker is one of the few albums i can listen to, start to finish, and with each new song i'm like, 'Oh yea, i love this song.'

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

the real dud would be Amy which kinda sucks. shakedown is a little derivative. damn sam is a touch weak.

how dare you make an exception of sweet lil gal. thats the most underrated song on the record. its gorgeous.

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

really?? i'm a big fan of AMY. i'll agree that shakedown is dirivitive but, most bluesy rock and rolls songs are. kind of like "tina toledo"... there really might not be anything there that you haven't heard before, but goddamn it still sounds good!

most people do like "sweet lil gal", so i'll accept your criticism... i find it boring though.

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

both "bartering lines" and "damn sam" are two of the most underrated songs on that album. "call me on your way back home" doesn't get enough credit either. that one would make my all-RA top 10 list.

I remember getting this album and hearing To Be Young...and being blown away.

'nuff said.

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

the thing that sticks out on heartbreaker is me driving around in the summer of 2001...just separated from my first wife...looking for a place to live...not knowing where to go...completely lost and depresseed....

...and this CD in my car being played over and over and over.

it's perfectly fine to enjoy coldplay's music so long as you still want to punch chris martin in the throat like the rest of us.

I ain't got nothing but love for you now.

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

I got Heartbreaker around Dec of 2000....dancing to To Be Young in my living room....Telling everyone that it was the best album I had heard in oh so long.....I had heard Stranger's Almanac, but this album excited me even more, seemed deeper...like cgoodwin, I was recently broken up from a long term relationship, and this thing just played and played on my stereo, until Gold came along, then I played that to death too...these two albums along with YHF by Wilco really defined the turn of the century for me, for sure...

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

great post. And I can identify with just about all of it s including the recent breakup part. Remember the first time you heard "come pick me up"? Wow...

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

this album came to me as 'ryans second' album.

i'd heard gold alot before then and decided to grab the back catelogue. got heartbreaker and although i liked it it grew on me. but i think thats because its quite different to gold. and its a veyr cock handed way to approach his work.

anyway, in no time i fell in love with it. i love all the tracks most peopel love. come pick me up, oh my sweet carolina, to be young, winding wheel.

its a perfect album.

yes there are songs that are nt as good as the rest f the album not, they are still ok songs.

ive never had an album without ONE weaker track on. i have albums i love that have some weaker tracks. even on gold there are weak points.

it is the quintisential relationship break up album.

I was recommended Gold as a starting point not long after it was released, so that was his first album I heard. Actually took it back to the shop after a couple of listens. Didn't hit me at all. Then I heard Heartbreaker and everything else followed from that

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

took it back! gosh!

think it went for me in order of hearing them:

gold
heartbreaker
pnuemonia

then the rest!

neve forget, by the time i'd fell in love with heartbreaker, i heard he was in a band called whiskey town.

so i went and bought it, went to a coffee shop, bought a huge coffee and sat and played carol lynn. That was it for me, i knew this guy was gona be a maasive part of music buying life! loved pneumonia and still do!

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

i wasn't big on 'to be young' when i first bought the CD (late 00)...i remember skipping that song and going straight to my winding wheel almost exclusivly. i felt the song didn't fit with the album. to be young is still one of my least fav. songs of ryan.

it's weird it seems like yesterday...i remember listening to this on 9/11 also...those days were the worst time in my life...

I used to do the same thing, Chris. Heartbreaker started on 'My Winding Wheel' for quite awhile.

Re: 10 years since Heartbreaker's release

I want to echo scummy man's comments about Pneumonia, loved it and still do. While many thought it sorta sold out the Whiskeytown ethic, I saw it as an example of what breadth Ryan & Caitlin had/have...a great album!
