On their myspace page, under "influences":

Great stuff. I think you just sold some cd's for them.

Ain't Much of a Soldier
-anthony da costa
Hello darling can you hear me
From this far across the sea?
It’s your soldier boy a-calling
To my darling Anna Lee
I’ve been thinking about you sugar
You’ve been in my dreams, you see?
I’ve been dreaming of your eyes
From what’s left of memory
CHORUS:
Wish you could see this sunrise
It’s the sweetest thing I’ve seen
Since I left your smile last winter
When we were just eighteen
Don’t wanna die for this country
I’d rather die for you anyday
Guess I ain’t much of a soldier
Hope you’ll love me anyway
I’m a long, long way from Kansas
It’s pretty plain to see
Never seen so many good men fall
I’m as scared as I can be
I don’t wanna kill nobody
I’m just doing what I’m told
They promised me glory
Like they promised me gold
CHORUS
Do you remember the carnival?
Do you remember the lake?
Do you remember that one night
Man, what a mistake
Do you remember my touch
Cause I remember yours
I’d rather fight the daylight
Than fight another man’s war
I want to come home to you
But I know my chance is small
You may find another
You may not miss me at all
But if you ever get this letter
Please, love me just the same
Cause if there’s one thing I’ve learned,
It’s that I’m a pawn in this game
Just a pawn in their game
CHORUS
.

i saw this kid at a folk festival in new york last summer. they had him participating one afternoon in a Beatles workshop, and he played "I'm Looking Through You" to the tune of "Don't Ask For The Water." the Ryan influence is unrelenting to the point of distraction in his music.

Holy mofo. He's the answer to Ryan's prayers, no? Ryan can go into hermitude somewhere and write his novels and whatnot, and he can get this guy to release records for him to keep the fans quiet.
Seriously though, great voice but I have to agree to some extent with hamster. I think he could be great in a few years once he's made his own way a bit. I really wanted to be a musician, but (aside from my complete incompetence with a guitar), I know this is what I'd end up like - devotedly imitating my idols (though admittedly not as well as this guy) to the point of ridiculousness and practically plaigarism. Still, as I say, he's got some talent and once he stops listening to so much Ryan he could be great.

"devotedly imitating my idols to the point of ridiculousness and practically plaigarism"
why is that? because he writes his own sad bastard songs and plays a guitar? give the guy a break, its not that easy to sound 'original' when hundreds of artists have gone before you doing that, especially not at age 18. besides, ryan isnt excactly the king of originality himself is he....
Re: holy mackerel this kid sounds exactly like Ryan (like a lost swedish session)
- Author: hamster
- 1/31/09 7:33:15 PM
the voice is exactly like ryan's circa heartbreaker, so is the musical/lyrical style and content (even blatantly lifting things like "easy plateau" and "bad nights/better days")
the age is not the issue. and ryan certainly borrows, but from variety of sources, and mixes them together in an original way, ending up sounding like himself.
but yeah, this is understandable. he's got loads of talent for sure. he just needs time to develop his own style. i'm sure he eventually will.
Re: holy mackerel this kid sounds exactly like Ryan (like a lost swedish session)
- Author: cyan_scarab
- 1/31/09 7:36:36 PM
That was a little harsh, and I meant it kind of more as a general comment - though the "Bad Nights/Better Days" title, the odd similar lyric - I know all things considered it's not exactly a huge ripoff but I do think that between influence and imitation he's closer to the latter quite considerably. Anyway as I say, he definitely has talent.

first time I listened to one of ryan's albums at a listening station in cd world, I didn't buy it because it sounded like songs I've heard before. I didn't think there was a bit of originality to it.

i never said he was. but this kid clearly imitates ryan. when i heard "Dear Chicago" i didn't think it was the most original thing in the world but i didn't think he was copying any one artist. see what i mean?
like the thread title says, he sounds exactly like RA. I just don't see much virtue in that. ryan put his own spin on the folky sad bastard thing, this kid need to learn to do the same. he's got the talent, he just needs to grow out of the too obvious copying.

you're not kidding.
and I don't mind at all that he sounds as much like ryan as he does (though I do hear damien rice in there as well). it's not like any of us could sound just like ryan if we tried. he's got a great voice that happens to be similar to an artist he really likes. and instead of just singing ryan songs, he writes seven albums worth of original material before he turns 18. damn impressive if you axe me.

I have not made up my mind on this guy yet, but he definitely deserves a listen. You can try out his second most recent album here:
http://bolachasgratis.baywords.
On most of the songs here, the Ryan Adams vocal style is not as overwhelming as on the newer album.

not sure now if I'm going to make it. I need to have my car towed after work. I'll have a loaner, but I probably shouldn't drive that into the city and park it uptown, as it'll be a brand new car.

i came across a clip of this guy singing Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues on youtube, in a weird imitation of the performance in that Scorcese film. It's a bit painful. His own songs sound nice, but way too on-the-nose derivative of Ryan for my taste.

Good to hear, sean. I'd like to see him sometime.
Was it a full band or just him? Setlist?

was mostly solo. abbie did a couple with him. and the girl who played first did one with him. she was really good also.
I don't have a setlist, but a bunch of new songs.

Saw him yesterday at Club Passim in Cambridge (MA)--great hour + half show playings songs from all his CDs, incl the new one. He's got a hell of a voice and sense of stage presence. If he keeps up like this, he's going to be a formidable songwriter. Some of the lyrics reflect his young age, but some of the songs have an agelessness and maturity that's quite good.
Nice Mountain Goats and Everly Bros cover, plus Close Up The Honkytonks. He's done his homework, and brings that knowledge to his own songs...
