Last time I checked, Mega Superior was an unreleased song that is only known within Ryan's hard core segment of fans, so the cover band vibe is a stretch. The Old 97's are named after a Cash song.

Just to be obnoxious, I'd just like to point out that the Rolling Stones named themselves after a Muddy Waters song because they indeed started out playing BLUES COVERS, not originals, and their first single was a Chuck Berry cover. And if I was going to list decent bands that took their names from other bands' songs, I'd leave Starsailor and Godsmack off.

"Here Come the Warm Jets" is an album by Brian Eno, which is kind of electronick-y and pretty boring. Never heard of the band, but they would be pretty indie-tastic to take their name from that.

Not saying it doesn't happen. Radiohead is just one of the instances where it hasn't been kind of lame. It immediately associates the band with the previous artist. Coat-tails.

when i was in middle school, i made up an imaginary band called epoch edifice. they were a duran duran-esque concoction, with a flock of seagulls- haired lead singer. they had ponderous, concept videos and undecipherable lyrics. i even designed their singles' sleeve art!
